My nitpicking is that some scenes are too dark to see
Go and see the production. One of the best war films ever made. I managed to secure my own copy of this film. This award-winning movie may become a real eye-opener for overseas audience. Apart from "Saving Private Ryan" American cinematography for the most part ignored the other side of WWII.
"Idi i smotri" shows the German occupation in Belarus through the eyes of a teenager. His village gets burned, his relatives get massacred, he becomes the witness of many other atrocities, joins underground partisan group.
The movie is very similar to "Saving Private Ryan" in that it shows the grim, the real face of the war. Yet it is quite different from Spielberg's masterpiece for it does not really show the happy ending, the way out, but rather leaves the reader to ponder over these tragic days.

I probably watch this movie about every two or three weeks and every it has the same effect every time, read total amazement, heart palpitations, panic attacks, vomiting, paranoia, psychotic episodes etc. etc. (figuratively speaking.
I think I have thought about this film everyday since I first saw it about 6 months ago, of Florya's face in the forest, Glasha green dress, the twin girls, the church, the Hitler trap, the swamp, the flying bullets. And the music is equatable to taking shelter from an earthquake in an amplifier.
This film will change your life. There can't possibly be a better compliment than that.

Man, thank you for the review. Hard to believe, that translated version touched you as original touched us, native speakers. But it is not only about spoken text there. It could be probably a movie without dialogues with almost the same effect. This is the only movie, I still cannot watch for the second time, after about 25 years of the first time seeing it. It is so realistic and immersive, that you feel yourself put in the middle of the war. I have grown up in Belarus, hearing all that stories from all the elder people around and what you see in the movie is the accumulated truth.
This movie is such a masterpiece. It's so surreal, it really transfers the feeling of helplessness and everything being far beyond your control. Swamp is a map straight out of l4d. That's funny, said the exact same thing when I saw it lol.
Everything in this movie is real and genuine. The uniforms, equipment and vehicles are the real deal. They even used live ammo in almost every seen involving shooting. They even shot a cow with an mg42. No Hollywood bullshit here.
Nazi Germany was terrifying.

This system will however at some point also appesr very bloated, as inevitably there will be talents that are just completely overshadowed by others who overlap with them. More choices means more finetuning.
It did take place in USSR but not Soviet Russia (it took place in Soviet Belarus. Go and search. I like the horizontal progression for expansions in Guildwars 2, as well as their guild housing.
